Horsemanship School
Vicki's Horsemanship School is an experiential, levels-based program for anyone looking to learn about horses from the ground up. From Tiny Tots for kids from 5 years old to the Handy Horsegals level for children and adults, the program aims to demystify the learning of true horsemanship by having students follow this specific curriculum. Riders will need to not only demonstrate competency but take a written test in order to move on to the next level. Riders graduating a level will be honored with a celebration at the ranch!
Level 1-Tiny Tots
This level is for kids and adults who are brand new to riding and just want to experience what it feels like to sit on a horse. Lessons are only 30 minutes long and will focus on the very basics of riding and horsemanship. Special attention will be given to safety around horses, grooming, and learning about how to move around them. Lessons will consist of 15 minutes of grooming and basic groundwork and 15 minutes of riding.
Level 2-Gifted Greenhorns
This level is for beginning kids and adults who want to learn more about horses and start to develop their horsemanship skills. Lessons are an hour long with 30 minutes of riding and 30 minutes of grooming and groundwork. Safety around horses will continue to be emphasized. Students will be introduced to horse psychology, the prey/predator dynamic, and the language of Calming Signals.
Level 3-Cowpoke Club
This level is for children and adults at the novice level. Lessons are an hour long with 30 minutes of riding and 30 minutes of horsemanship and groundwork. Students at this level catch, groom, and saddle their horse all by themself with supervision. More advanced groundwork maneuvers will be taught, as well as show grooming like clipping and mane pulling and typical vet care such as monitoring vital signs, wrapping legs, and treating wounds.
Level 4-Handy Horsegals
Our most advanced level for kids and adults, Handy Horsegals are Vicki's expert "cowgirls in training"! Sessions are two hours long, and include an hour of riding and an hour of various horsemanship duties. Riders at this level get to go on trail rides and assist Vicki with lessons and running the ranch. At this level, you might be asked to work a number of different horses during your lesson, or help one of the Greenhorns practice a task.
